PostSubject: Fifty Shades of Grey    Mon Jun 04, 2012 7:56 pm

First topic message reminder :

Hey guys, so about two months ago I was watching the news and this trilogy caught the eyes of American women across the nation(i don't know about other countries though). I saw a thread like this on mangaupdates and decided to give a swing at creating a discussion with people on sms about it.

I created a poll and allowed cancellation of votes in case people change their minds, such as those who haven't read it end up reading it and have a new opinion.

I heard a few things about it so far such as it was originally a fanfiction based on Twilight and that the characters are kind of one dimensional. So as of right now, I'm "not going to read it." However, I'm open-minded to other people's opinions whether it be good or bad (as long as it doesn't get ugly ie ill mannered language such as swearing).

I probably won't take part in the discussion very much because I haven't read it so it wouldn't be fair to give an opinion (unless I do decide to pick up the book)

Check out the summary on amazon if you haven't heard of it or just google the summary.

I've actually read and followed the story when the author was posting it as fan fiction. I didn't manage to finish the series before the author took it down.

However, now that its a best selling book, I can't seem to muster enough interest to read the books even though I've purchased them many months back.. Its weird how I tend to follow and read things online but when its a hard copy IRL, I never seem to be interested enough to finish the whole story XD

Shocked Not sure about that, since I have zero interest in the books. But if it is, I doubt it'll come to my shores legally... based on our discussions, it must be close to pornographic... Rolling Eyes

there is no way they could turn this into a movie. Honestly, I don't understand why it's so popular. I read (though I skimmed bits here and there) the first book and it was quite awful. Even beyond the terrible, unrealistic characters, it's not well written, and doesn't make any sense.

I can see the connection to twilight (as I somehow managed to read that a few years ago). They both have a completely naive, insecure and stupid female protagonist, with unrealistic, rich males that look like a "greek god" pop into their lives out of nowhere. The story, while different, is written in the same vein and have subpar writing.

I'll admit I attempted to read it but I got to page nine and gave it to my friend to read I just couldn't do it. I am the first person to admit I will read smut and I have even read some of the racier stuff like this is supposed to be but the difference is I read well written smut. My friend proceeded to tell me what a narrow escape I made because just like I thought for the most part the writing isn't that much better then a fifth graders. She said there were some parts that were good and no I don'te the sec sevens either but on the whole it sucked and the only reason it took off is that it is a publicized bdsm book so all these people are getting it feeling like they are doing something naughty but from what she tells me even that was rather vanilla compared to some of the stuff that I have read that is just considered romance.

I just heard on the radio that they announced the release date for the movie - August 2014 or 15. They do not even have the actors casted, but they have a release date for the movie. It baffles me. I have no idea how they would make the book into a movie - I started the book and stopped immediately when they got to the contract part. I can't imagine watching a movie about s&M.

I haven't read it and don't intend to. Many of my English major classmates and professors who have read it tell me that it is a poorly written piece and is unrealistic. My sister, who is an avid fiction reader, read it and hated it confirming how unrealistic the characters and events are. I have heard the same opinions over and over, so I have been discouraged to waste my precious limited time reading it. I heard that it is smut. Now, on that note, I have a respect for smut. It has its time, place, and purpose. So, while the work may not be distinguished Literature, it is what it is. For that, if it serves its duty well, then all the more power to it. I just don't have the time for that right now. It is fathomable that if I find myself wide open with free time and boredom, however unlikely, I just might think to try it out.

I think the funniest thing of the 50 sg phenomenon is that suddenly lots of people have interest in S&M literature, when S&M literature have existed since S&M was invented. Anne Rice has a series on it. I think this E. L. James success is based on over-hype, liking the trilogy because it's trendy, and people purchasing the book to see how bad it is.

If anyone's interested here's a link to the sporks of the first book and the general overveiw of trilogy.

Hm.... I was curious about all the hype about the book and actually read the 2nd book. It's way too extreme and obsessive for me. The relationship just doesn't make sense to me at all and the book is just poorly written... Then I was even more curious and watch the analysis sort of like a documentary about the series to see why it was so popular and it's basically about women's fantasy, etc. Don't even remember it anymore. So yeah, give me back my time!!!! lolz

How are they going to make this movie? scratch  They want to appeal to a wide audience as possible, so they're going to neutered the ''kinky'' scenes with probably a lot of close-ups, cut-aways and reaction shots to get a pg-13 rating. Suspect But what would be the point? Might as well stick to the books or rather better books. Never mind there's not enough material for 1 movie let alone 3.

How? No idea but they´ll make it work somehow. Hollywood was even able to do sth similar with "Twilight". The movie was better and gender neutral enough that I had to advise a friend that he better shouldn´t make his grandmother buy it for him. I find many recent books to be more or even a lot digestible when filmed. (The last one for me was "Warm Bodies" which actually wasn´t that awful, I think that I just forgot at some point that target audience is younger than me.) One way or another I´ll watch it. sunny I think that with many things "the point" isn´t compulsory. For me it´s that someone can prove that s/he can make it an acceptable movie because the era is like that.

I´ll take a bow if the fans hate it.

I have actually read the book if you think that reading two paragraphs from the second book is that. Well, I opened it randomly in a bookshop, pointed "This is Bella, this is Carlisle, they are talking about Edward, and at the moment Bella is just dying to be praised while hiding it magnificently, exactly like in the original series", proved the point to myself, put it down. It wasn´t even an exercise, the author should get something for making it this easy - stop, maybe it was no sweat for her too - but I think she got sth a lot. cherry

As you can see, I read the original four too. It was even amusing. I spent all night listening to the audio on YT and playing Minesweeper, LOLing. My skills got better and in the morning I went out with our dog and it had snowed. It was very pretty. Quite the same happened with the other books too. Me and my cousin gave nicknames to the books... "Toilet", "New Toilet", "E-Toilet", the fourth one was nasty. I should say that Bella had an awful character which was at its peak in "NT" (make sure that developing beings won´t get their hands on especially this one), on the other hand she became a lot better person after becoming a vampire. I was somewhat glad for her. The most enjoyable part is Meyer´s mythology, there is nothing else.

I once read some long-long text on Tumblr about our idea of romance. I´m quite sure that it begun with the actual take-out from "E-T" where Jacob forces himself on Bella (and she gets really into it). It was compared with actual rape-descriptions (from the victims side of course) and were find awfully similar. What I want to say that there is so much manga which is exactly the same. Plus, isn´t it that many Harlequins that SMS translates are originally erotica?

I've read all 3 of the Fifty Shades books, I'm 36 so I've read my share of erotica before. Well let me tell you, theses books were just BAD writing. I can't believe theses even got published in the first place. The writing was just horrible!! The sex scenes were hardly erotica in my opinion, I mean she didn't even use proper or even slang names for the body parts. She just called them "he touch me down there". Now what the hell is that?? Is this not supposed to be erotica? I mean they use better words then that on fanfiction.net?? The S&M wasn't all that bad in my opinion, after the first book, it really wasn't around much. One thing though, you could majorly tell that she had originally wrote this as fan fiction for Twilight, because the main characters had so much in common with those from Twilight. Her editors obviously didn't get her to change enough stuff, cause I could tell right away who she was modelling them from. I would highly NOT recommend these books, not because they're too steamy, but because they're horribly written!!

Not going to read it. EVER.
First I heard it's an erotica/porn book, I immediately refused to read it.
Then the rumor (or truth?) about it being based on Twilight? That's just simply not my cup of tea.
I mean, I can't even read Twilight pass page number 17...
I'm not going to torture myself for the second time (sorry Twilight fans).

First of all, I will never read it because I hate when a book become so hype by everyone and then when I read it and it suck. A friend of mine, read it and she say that the writing suck and it erotica so she dropped before she could finish it. I don't like reading erotica book.

I found out that at first they plan to put as Nc-17 but turn out it'll be Rated-R so yep R

I've heard they are thinking about releasing a R-rated version and a Pg-13 rating, but nothing about a NC-17 rating. Which is stupid and hope it's not true. This is dumb enough without releasing several different versions to clog the movie theatres.

well I just watched the trailer and ... eh. It looks like one of those run of the mill late night erotic cable movies with a higher budget. So maybe it'll be okay.

And it's starring the charisma black hole (don't care to find out his name) that played the huntsman in Once Upon A Time.  lol!

I mean I knew that Ryan Gosling and Charlie Hunnam turned down the part but geez.  Laughing

Shouldn't there be another version of this trailer with more naughty parts in it though?  scratch

I read the summary because I was bored. It didn't really interest me and the storyline was pretty weird. It is basically porno to me. I don't really interest me and I prefer harlequin over Fifty Shades of Grey more because I like the storyline better. Fifty Shades of Grey is a something I would not try to read and something I would avoid.
